“My culture is NOT your prom dress!' Twitter users accuse teen of insensitivity after she wore a Chinese 'qipao' dress to the big dance - but she insists she was showing 'appreciation'.”

A high school student has been accused of cultural appropriation after she wore a Chinese dress to her prom.

Utah native Keziah Daum, 18, took toTwitter last weekend to reveal a series of photos of herself and her friends at her high school prom.

In the photots, Keziah can be seen wearing a qipao — a traditional Chinese outfit dating back to the 17th century — which some social media users found offensive, and promptly told her so.

Keziah posed for many of the traditional shots in her qipao, standing with her date and friends.

But on one shot, she and her female friends can be seen posing with their hands clasped palm to palm, bowing, while their male friends behind them made inverted V signs with their fingers.

Some have taken the combination of Keziah's outfit and the bowing as offensive.

Twitter user Jeremy Lam appears to have been the first to comment after happening upon Keziah's post. He retweeted it with the caption, 'My culture is NOT your goddamn prom dress.'

The pictures quickly went viral, and others began to accuse the teen of cultural appropriation as well.

Cultural appropriation is defined as the act of taking or using things from a culture that is not your own, especially without showing that you understand or respect this culture.

In a series of subsequent tweets, Jeremy went on to explain that the qipao was originally a loose dress or garment worn by Chinese women to clean the house or do domestic chores.

He added that it was then adopted by Asian women as a symbol of activism and fight against 'patriarchal oppression'.

'For it to simply be subject to American consumerism and cater to a white audience, is parallel to colonial ideology,' he added.

This was a sentiment shared by @JeannieBeanie99, who wrote: 'This isn’t ok. I wouldn’t wear traditional Korean, Japanese or any other traditional dress and I’m Asian. I wouldn’t wear traditional Irish or Swedish or Greek dress either. There’s a lot of history behind these clothes. Sad.'

Another user, @bunchukuu, wrote: 'Just because it’s okay to a few chinese people doesn’t mean it’s okay to all of us? our traditional dress isn’t meant to be a fashion statement or make you appear more "exotic". there’s a long history behind the dress and white people are not a part of it.'
