“冬至”，是二十四节气中的第二十二节气，通常在12月21日或者22日。在这一天，北半球昼最短夜最长。这些都是我们在地理课上学到的。那么，“冬至”的英语该怎么说呢？

1.冬至的英文是什么？

就像许多带有中国文化特色的词汇一样，最直接的方法就是音译，冬至既然是一个节日，所以可以说成“Dongzhi Festival”。

不过，冬至也指一种自然现象，英文中将其称为 winter solstice, solstice源自拉丁语solstitium, sol 是太阳的意思，-stes 意为standing, 字面意思是太阳站立的地方，Webster 的解释是：

either of the two points on the ecliptic at which its distance from the celestial equator is greatest and which is reached by the sun each year about June 21 and December 21.

可见，solstice是离赤道（the celestial equator）最远的两个点，一个是在6月，即夏至，另一个在12月，就是我们说的冬至，所以这个词的前面加上winter, 就是冬至。

2.中国人为什么比较重视冬至？

As early as 2,500 years ago, about the Spring and Autumn Period (770-476 BC), China had determined the point of Winter Solstice by observing movements of the sun with a sundial. It is the earliest of the 24 seasonal division points. The time will be each December 22 or 23 according to the Gregorian calendar.

早在二千五百多年前的春秋时代，我国已经用土圭观测太阳测定出冬至来了，它是二十四节气中最早制订出的一个。时间在每年的 阳历 12 月 22 日或者 23 日之间。

Ancient china did pay great attention to this holiday, regarding it as a big event. There was the saying that "Winter solstice holiday is greater than the spring festival".

中国古代的确非常重视这个节日，认为它是一件大事。有句话说“冬至大如年。”

As ancient Chinese thought, the yang, or muscular, positive things will benete stronger and stronger after this day, so it should be celebrated.

中国古人认为，在这一天之后，阳、或肌肉、积极的东西会变得越来越强大，所以应该庆祝一下。

所以一直到现在，冬至仍然是我们中国人一个非常重要的日子。

3.冬至有什么习俗？

“ ShuJiu ” is a Chinese custom, That is nine periods from the beginning of the midwinter, every period have nine days.

“数九”是中国的一个风俗，就是从冬至开始，九天为一个周期，一共数九个周期。

Winter Solstice?is a time for the family to get together. One activity that occurs during these get togethers (especially in the southern parts of China and in Chinese communities overseas) is the making and eating of Tangyuan?or balls of glutinous rice, which symbolize reunion.

冬至是家族团聚的一天。在这天，中国南方的家庭会包汤圆、吃汤圆，以象征团圆的意思。不过在中国北方，似乎更多的人会吃饺子。比如说会有“冬至到，吃水饺”这样的谚语。

4.汤圆还是饺子？

In some parts of Northern China, people eat dumpling on this day, saying doing so will keep them from frost in the upneting winter.?
