一、腊八节由来英语介绍

Laba is celebrated on the eighth day of the last lunar month, referring to the traditional start of celebrations for the Chinese New Year. "La" in Chinese means the 12th lunar month and "ba" means eight. 

腊八在阴历最后一个月庆祝，标志者中国新年庆祝的开始。 "腊" 在汉语中意味着阴历第十二个月，“八”意思是8.

Legends about the originof this festivity abound. One holds that over 3,000 years ago sacrificial rites called "La "(腊) were held in the twelfth lunar month when people offered their preys to the gods of heaven and earth. The Chinese characters for prey (猎物) and the twelfth month (腊) were interchangeable then, and ever since "La" has been used to refer to both. 

这个节日起源的传说很多。其中之一认为三千多年前名叫"腊"的献祭的仪式在阴历第十二个月举行，这天，人们对天神和地神供奉猎物。在那是汉字"猎物"和第十二个月"腊"是可以相互替代的，从那时起，"腊"一直用于指二者。

Since the festival was held on the eighth day of the Last month, people later appended the number eight ("ba" in Chinese), giving us the current Laba . 

由于这个节日在最后一个月的第八天庆祝，人们后来补充了数字8（汉语“八”）.因而有了现在的“腊八”。

The majority Han Chinese have long followed the tradition of eating Laba rice porridge on the Laba Festival. The date usually falls in mid-January.

二、腊八粥英语介绍

The two most important traditions associated with Laba Festival are: eating Laba porridge, and praying for peace and good health in the coming year.

腊八节这天，两个最重要的传统就是喝腊八粥和祈福新年平安了。

Laba rice porridge contains glutinous rice, red beans, millet, Chinese sorghum, peas, dried lotus seeds, and some other ingredients, such as dried dates, chestnut meat, walnut meat, almond, peanut, etc. 

At least eight ingredients will be used, cooked with sugar to make the porridge tasty.

腊八粥包括糯米，红豆，小米，高粱米，青豆，莲子等成分，“八”同时也象征着粥里要包含八种以上成分，并与糖调和，给人以甜糯软香的口感。

People from north of China prefer to use glutinous rice, red beans, dates, lotus seeds, dried pulp, walnuts, pine nuts and other dried fruits in their porridge; whilst southerners enjoy a salty porridge prepared with rice, soybeans, peanuts, broad beans, taro, water chestnuts, walnuts, vegetables and diced meat. Some people also like to add cinnamon and other condiments to make ita special flavour.

三、腊八节其它习俗英文介绍

1.腊八蒜（Laba garlic）

Another custom is the soaking of Laba garlic. Garlic is soaked in vinegar for more than twenty days starting from Laba festival. Then when the Chinese New Year comes, the garlic and vinegar is used alongside jiaozi on the table.

腊八节的另一传统式腌制腊八蒜。从腊八节那天起，就将蒜泡在醋中二十多天，这样，到春节的时候，就可以在餐桌上与饺子同食了。

2.腊八冰（Laba ice）

Northerners have a custom of leaving a basin of water outside the house to be frozen; they break this ice into pieces and eat it on Laba Day. 

北方人有一个习俗，他们在房子外面放一盆水等水冻成冰，在腊八节那天把冰捣碎并把它吃掉。

The ice on this day is said to possess supernatural power, capable of keeping those who eat it free from stomachache for a whole year.

据说，这天的冰拥有超自然的力量，它能让吃了的人一整年都不会肚子疼。

3.煮五豆（Boiling five kinds of beans）

In some areas, people boil five kinds of beans and make a dough in the shape of sparrow’s head on the eighth day of the 12th lunar month. They believe if they eat “sparrow heads”, the sparrows will have headaches and not harm their crops in the coming year.

有一些地区，人们在农历十二月初八那天煮五种豆子，并将面团揉成一个麻雀的头的形状。人们相信如果吃“麻雀头”，麻雀就会头疼，来年它们就不会伤害农作物。
